How do I become a Minnesota's Future Doctor?
You must apply
during the month of February in the freshmen year of college to be eligible for
the Minnesota's Future Doctors program. Application will be available on the MN
future Doctors website.
Why is the Minnesota's Future Doctors Program Important?
Amazing Diversity
Demands Diverse Doctors
Minnesota is
amazingly culturally diverse. American Indians, African Americans, Latinos,
Asian and African immigrants provide vibrant energy.
Unfortunately,
current doctors do not reflect the minority and rural core of Minnesota. Our
state simply needs more doctors who reflect the diversity of Minnesota.
Who is running the Program?
The
MN future Doctors program is a collaboration between
the University of MN and Mayo.
Who Can Apply?
College
freshmen and sophomores on a 5-year plan are eligible to apply. It is strongly suggested that freshman
applying should have taken biology and chemistry OR have a strong
background in biology and chemistry and are graduating in 4 years. If freshman are NOT graduating
in 4 years and have a 5-year plan they should wait until their sophomore year
and then apply.
What happens if I find out about this program after the deadline
for the application?
If you will be a
sophomore the following year and you plan to do a 5-year plan, you can apply
the following year.
Who is MFD program designed for?
It is designed
for students that come from any underrepresented group/ community.
Is there a minimum GPA requirement?
A minimum
overall GPA of 3.0 is required and we would prefer that you would have taken
some science courses (i.e. chemistry and biology).
What happens if you can’t take part in all 3 summers?
You can apply to
the academic year program or wait until the next year to apply if you will
still qualify. All students accepted to the summer program MUST take part in
ALL three summers. Exception will only be made in extreme situations.
