How does Minnesota's Future Doctors Work?
Freshman Year of College (You may be considered if you are in your sophomore year.)

- Optional: Email Jo Peterson, PhD, the Director at jopete@umn.edu during your freshman year to discuss your interest in medicine.
What to include in that first email to Jo?
- Your high school grades,
- your ACT in high school,
- If you are from an underserved community member.
- Information about your family,
- Your family income,
- Your parents jobs/careers and education level,
- How many years you have lived in Minnesota,
- Your citizenship status,
- Your grades in high school, your ACT score, and
- Provide your unofficial college transcript.
- You may be asked to attend a winter break event, focusing on summer programs in Minnesota and throughout the country. A writing workshop will be held for applications to various programs.
- Apply to Minnesota's Future Doctors by February 1, 2011
- Attend a late spring event by invitation
- Develop a solid "pre medical summer" plan
- Ensure that your GPA stays above a 3.2 through mid sophomore year and 3.4 after that point
Sophomore Year: Introduction to Medicine
- Shadow a physician once a month, you'll be matched with your own - with your hard work and Jo's help
- Volunteer for various events hosted by Future Docs scholars and do your own volunteering
- Learn how to become an excellent med school applicant by attending fall, winter, and spring events
- Explore complex clinical environments through hospital and medical school tours, as well as case studies in our events
- Meet with Jo to chart your path
- Create a leadership project that fuels your passion for medicine
- Get to know other future docs
- Have a very meaningful pre med summer

Junior Year: Develop your Application to Med School
- Develop AMCAS 15 experiences through writing workshops and one-on-one coaching with writing consultants (October)
- Write AMCAS personal statement and continue to refine their AMCAS 15 experiences (January)
- Complete their AMCAS (March)
- Prepare for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and take the MCAT (take the test spring or summer)
Summer Before Senior Year: AMCAS & MCAT
- Apply for medical school using American Medical College Admissions System (AMCAS)
- Prepare for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and take the MCAT
Senior Year: Interview for Med School
- Train for medical school interviews
- Interview for medical school
- Gain acceptance to medical school by April
- Start medical school in August
