Freshman Year: Admission to the Program, First Steps
Get excellent grades during your first semesters of college. There is no deadline for being accepted. We have a monthly rolling admissions process.
- If you accepted during your freshman year, you will be STRONGLY encouraged to apply to the SMDEP (national program) and other programs for the summer after freshman year. Do yourself a favor and check them out now.
- You may also be ready to start working with a matched physician mentor, meeting with older future docs, and starting other partnerships in volunteering and research. All students start an individual program.

How to apply to MN Future Docs?
1. Ask yourself if you are in our targeted audience.
- Are you in the first generation of your family to attend college? (Your parents did not attend college?)
- Are you from an underserved rural community or underserved minority community?
- Did you have a 22 ACT or a combined verbal and math SAT of 1000?
- Do you have a college GPA of 3.0 overall and a 3.0 in your math and science courses?
- Is your family VERY economically challenged? (Examples: You received free or reduced lunch in high school, your family receives Minnesota Care health coverage, you receive Pell Grants.)
- Are you ready to work hard as a pre med student?
HINT: This is NOT a program for all high potential pre meds. It is for students who have barriers to success (poverty, homelessness, first in family to attend college, from underserved communities). Please do not apply if you are not under served or under resourced. Your application will NOT be considered.
2. Apply.
Click on the application button on this site.
Complete the simple application form. Take your time and prepare your responses well.
If your grades are not solid (example: less than a 3.0 GPA) - please wait to apply until you have a better GPA.
3. Email Your College Transcripts.
To complete your application, you must email your unofficial college transcripts (from all colleges) to mnfuturedocs@gmail.com
4. Expect an initial e-mailed response within 10 days.
Your initial application will be reviewed by our team. You may be asked to provide additional information.
Here are common emailed responses to your initial application:
- Your application will be forwarded to our committee for review. We will be notifying you shortly regarding our decision to interview you.
- Your application needs work, it isn't written at college level. Redo it.
- Your grades are not sufficient. Please re-apply at the end of the semester.
- Your college coursework is at pre-college level. Apply when you have completed college level mathematics or science coursework.
- You are not under served or under resourced. You aren't a member of our target audience.
5. You will be invited for an in-person or phone discussion.
You will be contacted by Jo and an interviewer. You will work with the interviewer to set up your interview schedule.
A larger committee will review the discussion/interview notes and your application.
6. Expect final notification within 30 days of disucssion/interview.
You will receive an update within 30 days regarding your status with the program.
