Carleton. A Great Place for Pre-Meds      Dennis Ea, Current Sophomore

1. Why is your school good for pre-meds?

Carleton has an excellent history of preparing its students for medical school. This small, liberal arts college provides rigorous academics alongside a wealth of opportunities for community service which have helped its students complete impressive applications every year. I've heard that Carleton is among the top 3 schools in MN for percentage of matriculated students into med school.

2. What are some clubs pre-meds should be involved in?

To name a few that I'm involved in: American Medical Student Association (AMSA), Minority Student Pre-Health Coalition (MSPC), Carls Against Cancer - there are many more that are directly health-related.

3. Who are some good advisors?

Pam Middleton is our Pre-med adviser. She is wonderful.

4. Who are some good professors?

Susan Singer (Biology, Genetics, Plant Bio, etc.), Dani Kohen (Chemistry, Thermodynamics), Joe Chihade (Organic Chem), Linda Burdell (Spanish), Gail Nelson (Calculus), Liz McDowell (Physics) - pretty much every prof that I've had :)

5. What classes do you recommend taking, especially for MCAT prep?

There is a recommended coursework plan that Pam Middleton has put together for MCAT preparation. Most students at Carleton follow it regardless of their major. It's pretty flexible.

6. What majors do you recommend?

You can do any major at Carleton and be pre-med. I guess it would be a bit easier to be a science major but not by a significant amount.

7. What are some research and paid opportunities?

Many of my friends (freshman) found opportunities after their freshman year to do research at Carleton over the summer. I'd say that there are many openings for students to do research at Carleton and I've heard that Carleton supports students who do research at other institutions as well. The best way to get a job position is to ask a prof!

8. Anything else you would like to add?
