If you are applying to med school in 2014...
Your Goal is to start medical school in August 2015:

Remainder of this current academic year:
1. Meet with Jo to plan
Meet with Jo to make plans remainder of this acdemic year and 2012 summer.
Meeting agenda:
GPA, BCPM GPA, Leadership, Research, Community Service, Shadowing, Volunteering in Medicine, and Other Pre-Med Experiences
Summer 2012 planning - you must apply to most great programs early! You are welcome to work with our e-editors as you apply.
Discuss what classes you plan to take, and when. How do they impact your ability to take the MCAT? When?
Are you going to travel internationally? When? Make certain that is part of your AMCAS and MCAT planning.
2. How is your overall GPA and BCPM GPA?
You need to make certain that your overall GPA and your BCPM (biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics) GPA is top notch. If you aren't at a 3.4 or above it, you need to stop your extracurriculars and focus on your grades.
3. Get moving on shadowing a physician.
4. Are you volunteering in medicine?
Have you started volunteering in a clinic or hospital? If not, you must apply to volunteer today. Volunteer the least number of hours that are required by your hospital or clinic.
5. What is your leadership goal?
Are you leading a group, leading a project, or launching your own health disparities project? If not, get moving. Start planning. You only need to set aside four hours per month.
6. Are you volunteering in the community yet?
Do you have a meaningful cross-cultural experinece where you are meeting with people who really need your help? If not, you should make this a priority - only four hours each month.
7. When will you do RESEACH?
Have you done research? If not, you should.
When will you do lab based or community based research? This academic year? This summer? Make certain you set aside time AND that you apply for meaningful research programs or internships.
2012 Summer
Research? SMDEP? Make certain you have a meaningful pre med summer.
